Replica Gucci HandbagsSentencing Joshua Paul Heta in the Christchurch District Court yesterday, Judge Raoul Neave told him that he had picked on soft targets by stealing from elderly people in their own homes.
Defence counsel Rupert Glover said Heta, 33, had pleaded guilty and was remorseful about his crimes, even returning one of the women's handbags to the police kiosk so personal items could be returned to her.
The judge said that despite Heta's lack of violence towards his victims and apparent remorse, he did not accept Glover's attempt to portray Heta as a "gentleman burglar".

Heta had been jailed for similar offences and had not long been out of prison when he committed the latest burglaries.
Crown 24in. t5 tube light led prosecutor Deirdre Elsmore said there had originally been nine charges, but the Crown had agreed to

The judge said that preying on the elderly in their own homes could break their confidence.
"It can bring an end to their ability to maintain themselves in their own homes," he said.
"The loss of independence that can bring on in many people can be fatal. You could have killed them."
Glover said Heta had expressed an interest in taking part in a restorative justice conference with his victims, but the judge said he did not think that was practical.
