YOUNG people in Notts are being urged to protect themselves from chlamydia ahead of Valentine's Day tomorrow.

About one in 10 young people in the county are thought to have the sexually transmitted infection (STI), which can leave women infertile.

NHS Notts County is now leading a new Month Of Love campaign to encourage people aged 16 to 24 to get tested.

Bosses hope anyone worried about chlamydia gets in touch during February to ask for a free test.

One woman, who did not want to be named, took the test at a bar while on a night out in Mansfield.

She said: "I think it's a great idea to go out and screen people in places such as bars and clubs as they are out with friends and it's in a setting where young people feel comfortable.

"Taking the test was simple, really easy to do and very discreet.

THE importance of personal safety is being highlighted by the Tamworth Community Safety Partnership in the run up to Valentine's Day.

There were medals to come but they took some time coming and were fewer than expected and fewer golds than hoped for -- for a while. By the midway point of the Games, the nation was seized by the usual paroxysms of self-doubt and flagellation. "Own the Podium," we were told, was too arrogant, too self-confident a slogan for Canadians. It should be, as one wag suggested only partly in jest, "Rent the Podium: to the Americans," who were doing quite well at the time and, in the end, would end up winning due to the peculiar scoring system used by the Olympics replica hublot watches where a gold medal is worth no more than a bronze.

The third-place finish in total medals, the record number of gold medals, the magnificence of the athletes in all the other sports would have meant less without Sidney Crosby's overtime winner on Sunday night.
